Tank Agitator Installation for Units with Flange Mounted Power Pack, Multiple Shaft Segments

Rendering of ProQuip Q Series Tank Agitator with HiFlow ImpellerInstalling a tank agitator with multiple shaft segments demands meticulous planning and strict compliance with mechanical and safety standards. The following guide outlines the general steps involved in the installation process; it is essential to refer to the user manual for your specific agitator model.

Pre-Installation Checklist

Before beginning agitator installation, review all technical documents provided by ProQuip. This includes the installation manual, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, and equipment specification sheets. Having these references on hand ensures that every step is performed to specifications.

Next, gather and prepare all required tools and equipment. Typical items include lifting gear such as cranes or chain hoists, torque wrenches, and alignment tools.

Electrical installation will require standard wiring tools, and all personnel must be equipped with proper safety gear, including helmets, gloves, and eye protection.

Finally, confirm that the site itself is fully prepared. The tank or vessel should be clean and easily accessible, structural supports must be

verified for adequate load-bearing capacity, and electrical and control systems should be ready for integration.

Tank Agitator Installation Process

Begin the tank agitator installation  process by preparing the foundation and mounting area. Ensure that the agitator base or drive support structure is completely flat and level before positioning and securing the base plate or support flange. Verify that the assembly is properly aligned with the vessel flange or tank top.

Once the foundation is secure, lay out all shaft segments and couplings on a clean surface. Inspect each shaft for straightness and surface integrity.

When installing shafts, carefully align and couple the segments.  Torque all fasteners to values indicated on the supplied drawings.

Attach the impellers to the designated shaft segments, ensuring that they are installed at the correct axial heights as defined by the process design. Secure them with specified keys (if required) and fasteners.  Torque all fasteners to values indicated on supplied drawings.

With the shaft and impellers in place, mount the gearbox on the top flange or bridge structure and align it carefully before installing the motor. Double-check all couplings and torque settings to ensure mechanical integrity.

After the mechanical installation is complete, proceed with the electrical work. Connect the motor to the power supply, ensuring that grounding is properly established, and interface with the control panel or variable frequency drive (VFD) if one is being used. Test electrical continuity and confirm that the motor rotation direction is correct.

Before commissioning, conduct final checks. Manually rotate the shaft to verify smooth movement and clearance. Measure for run-out and confirm that vibration levels fall within tolerance. Finally, ensure that all shaft guards and safety covers are securely installed.

Commissioning and Testing

The next step in tank agitator installation is commissioning and testing. Commissioning begins with a dry run test, where the agitator is operated without load to confirm motor performance, shaft alignment, and vibration levels.  Do not run the agitator in air for an extended period of time as this can damage the equipment.  Once satisfactory, conduct a wet test by filling the tank with the process liquid and running the agitator under actual conditions. Monitor operating parameters such as load, temperature, noise, and current draw throughout the test.

If required, fine-tune the setup by adjusting VFD settings, and carefully inspect for any seal leaks or unusual bearing noise before transitioning to full-scale operation.

Safety Notes

Throughout tank agitator installation and commissioning, always follow proper safety procedures. Equipment must be locked out and tagged out (LOTO) before any installation or maintenance activity. Personnel must never enter the tank unless confined space entry procedures are followed. All work should comply with OSHA standards and local safety guidelines.
