Corn Mazes Bring Big Fun to Fall

Technology Helps Farmers Create More Sophisticated and Engaging Designs

Photo of path in corn mazeIn this In The Mix blog, we explore an activity that is becoming a must do during the fall season: navigating a corn maze. The corn industry is a primary focus for ProQuip. We provide agitators to over 100 ethanol producers in the U.S. and around the globe.

So with fall here, we thought it would be fun to talk about another use of corn. Corn mazes have become a beloved autumn tradition for people of all ages seeking an outdoor adventure. Some mazes can be navigated quickly and easily (great for young children and seniors), while others are intricate puzzles that are a difficult and often unnerving challenge for most. Let’s take a look into why corn mazes are so popular as well as their history, how they’re designed/constructed and some navigation tips.

Why Have Corn Mazes Become So Popular?

Corn mazes are popular for many reasons. First, they have increasingly sophisticated, creative and engaging designs. This translates to a better experience of exploring, problem-solving, and laughing your way through the maze until reaching the end. The ultimate result? More fun!

But corn mazes are not just about the experience itself; it’s also about the memories you can create with family and friends. There’s something special about getting lost, finding your way again, and figuring it all out – especially when you’re doing it with people that mean the most to you.

Finally, corn mazes provide a chance to disconnect from the digital world and engage with the real one, all while enjoying the natural beauty of the fall season in a rural setting. No mobile phone required (except for those who want to share the moment on Instagram)!

History of Corn Mazes

The concept of mazes and labyrinths dates back thousands of years.

The Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians used them for various reasons including puzzles, games and mythological/religious purposes.

The corn maze came into existence much more recently. The first recorded modern corn maze was created in Pennsylvania in the early 1990s. The concept rapidly spread to farms across corn-growing regions around the world.

How Corn Mazes are Designed and Constructed

Corn maze design is a blend of art, technology, and farming.

The first and most important design step is related to the last item – plant the right corn. The corn used for most mazes is field corn. This variety is tall and sturdy, which makes it ideal for creating path walls that are taller than most people and will survive the rigors of visitor interaction.

The next step in corn maze design is deciding on a theme or pattern for it. This could be anything from a simple geometric pattern to a detailed representation of a person, place, thing, story or almost anything you can imagine.

Once the general design is determined, GPS technology is used to plot the maze directly onto the field (no more manual staking). Some may even use GPS-enabled planters to form paths by omitting seeds.

Regardless of how GPS is used, it has led to more intricate and elaborate maze designs. The largest corn maze recorded by Guinness World Records covered nearly 70 acres. It was created by Luc Pelletier in La Pocatière, Québec, Canada, in October 2022. This showcases the scale and creativity that can be achieved in corn maze design.

When the corn is tall enough, the cutting begins (if seeds have not been omitted to form paths). Using the GPS coordinates, farmers use tractors or mowers to cut the maze paths. Drones are sometimes used to ensure construction progress matches the design.

After the paths are cut, the ground is smoothed to make the maze walkable and safe for visitors. Then, the final touches are added including lighting, directional signs and fall or Halloween-themed decorations.

While corn mazes take an incredible amount of work over many months to design and construct, the result is both beautiful and challenging.

How to Navigate a Corn Maze

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your corn maze adventure and navigate more effectively.

  1. Before heading to the maze
    • Research the size, theme, and any special rules/events on the farm’s website or social media. However, don’t try to find online navigation maps. This will ruin the fun if you know the exact path to successfully reach the exit in advance.
    • Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. This includes hats and sunscreen for sunny days and jackets for cooler weather. Comfortable shoes are a must. Avoid open toe shoes for safety reasons.
    • Pack water, snacks, and a fully charged phone. The phone may be useful as a flashlight but otherwise try to keep in your pocket (except for Instagram-worthy moments). Stay in the moment!
  • At the maze
    • Obtain maps and other navigation tools/tips at the entrance. Note any landmarks or checkpoints on the map.
    • Buddy-up with others in your group to share navigation ideas and tactics.
    • Follow the rules to avoid accidents and damage to the maze.
    • Set a time limit if necessary to ensure you can exit safely before the maze closes.
    • Stay calm if lost. Help is usually available if needed.

By following these tips, you can maximize your corn maze fun and successfully plot your way through it to the end!
