3 Ways Viscosity Affects Your Industrial Mixer Specifications and Mixing Process
Anyone who’s spent time in the lab testing the physical properties of materials soon discovers it can be difficult to
judge the viscosity of liquids. Why is it important to know the true viscosity of the material you want to mix? Having an accurate viscosity value for the material you want to mix, be it bioprocess slurry, adhesive, shampoo, ethanol or something else, has a direct effect on three important industrial mixer specifications:
- The horsepower of the mixer motor
- The design of your mixing vessel
- The mixing time required for your process
If your viscosity value for the material you want to mix is incorrect, you could procure an industrial mixer with the wrong specifications for your process. When this occurs, the industrial mixer will do too much or too little for your mixing requirements – both of which will cost you extra money (because you purchased an industrial mixer that does more than your process requires or because you need to upgrade the industrial mixer you purchased to one with better performance)!
Is it easy to get the viscosity value of the material you are mixing wrong? At ProQuip, we have tested the viscosity of liquids submitted to us described to be “like motor oil” and found viscosity values from 10 cps to above 30,000 cps! The viscosity of SAE 30 motor oil (at room temp) is actually 150 cps.
